I'm sure it relates in some way to bad breath and tooth decay.

Bacterial Endocarditis Can have several causes, one of which is bacteria entering the blood stream during dental work (blood is normal completly free of bacteria). If Streptococci ,which are part of the normal flora of the human mouth, enter the blood stream, they can circulate and come to infect the inner layer of the heart - the endocardium -especially if it is already in some why damaged or if the valves have a defect.
