A cardiologist. There are different types of cardiologists, there are those that deal with the structure of the heart and those that deal with the electrical impulses that "power" the heart but any doctor dealing with something having to do with the heart is a cardiologist.

A pediatric cardiologist and / or a pediatric cardio-thoracic surgeon. The field of pediatric cardiology was essentially created by Helen Taussig of Johns Hopkins. Dr. Taussig was partially deaf due to a childhood infection. She therefore went to McGilll in Canada as they had the largest store of pathological specimens of congential heart lesions. She returned to Baltimore with the idea that congenital heart lesions were a matter of faulty 'plumbing'. Dr. Taussig approached Hopkins surgeon Alfred Blalock with the notion that Tetrology of Fallot or so-called blue baby syndrome could be surgically repaired. In the 1940s heart surgery on adults was a novelty and there had been no attempt at performing surgery on the heart of a child. Dr. Blalock suggested that Dr. Taussig work with laboratory assistant Vivien Thomas. Dr. Taussig and Mr. Thomas experimented on animals for many months. These 2 then convinced Dr. Blalock to attempt such a surgical procedure the likes of which had quite literally never been done before. On November 29, 1944 with Denton Cooley as an Intern and surgical assistant Taussig and Thomas told Dr. Blalock step by painful step what to connect where. The Blalock-Taussig shunt worked! and this surgical procedure made the front page of every newspaper in the world within 24 hours. Thus not only did Dr. Taussig create pediatric cardioglogy she is largely responsible for the field of pediatric cardio-thoracic surgeons that was to follow. I had the honor of meeting Dr. Taussig and Dr. Cooley in Houston decades ago. I have been in the building at Hopkins named for Dr. Blalock but I never had the pleasure of his acquaintance.
