Hi - Rheumatic fever is a condition that potentially ocurs after a streptococcal throat infection that goes untreated with antibiotics - the body produces antibodies to the strep, but these antibodies also affect the heart and other organs in some people. This is potentially serious (again, especially the heart effects); and so it needs to be monitored and treated. One of the treatments is penicillin, which is an antibiotic against streptococcus. It is not a steroid. If you leave rheumatic fever untreated, or do not stick to your treatment, you may damage your heart valves (permanently), and this is called rheumatic heart disease. For these reasons, a strep throat should always be treated with an antibiotic. Other causes of throat infections (esp. viruses) do not require antibiotics as urgently, or at all.
