dogs get heart worms from mosquitos. heart worms are fatal if not treated. if caught in teh early stages heart worms can be treated with the monthly preventative. the preventative stops the worms reproduction cycle so the worms the dog has will eventually die. heartworms can be treated but it is best to prevent them. some dogs won't show signs until they are in teh advanced stages of the disease. the usual signs are fatigue and difficulty breathing and moving around and cough. the worms cause the heart to pump ineffectively, leading to enlarged heart and often pneumonia. your vet can detect heartworm disease with a simple blood test and if your dog tests positive your dog will get a chest x-ray to see how advanced the disease is
