what is the total cost of treating each of the following? COPD, Heart Disease, Stroke and Diabetes

what is the total cost of treating each of the following? COPD, Heart Disease, Stroke and Diabetes?
I'm doing a paper on preventative healthcare. My hunch is, if we invest more in preventative care and wellness promotion, we'll save more money on healthcare in the long run. So, are you saying Dr. Frank that people should die sooner? okay, no one has posted actual numbers. Thanks for the answers though, but you didn't really answer my question. I couldn't find the numbers on the internet, so I will call insurance companies instead, and get, ....uh "quotes". For all who answered, thank you.

Cost of treatment of diseases varies from country to country. Improvement of lifestyle including healthy diet and exercise may prevent most of the above illnesses.

That was a hunch that Nye Bevan, the founder of the NHS had. He believed that if you got to grips with disease that costs in the Health service would drop as you basically fixed everyone.Unfortunately this is not what happened. The longer we live, the more diseases we get and the costlier if becomes to keep us going. Health promotion should not be ignored, however it has never really been all that successful as you need to change societal attitudes to behaviour and this often takes decades. Preventative medicine holds out more hope, but the public are often sceptical and indeed fearful of doctors attempts to do this.Good recent examples are the decline in MMR uptake and the significant resistance to mothers getting the HPV vaccine for their daughters. The NHS spends £817.5 million annually managing COPD.This would be massively reduced basically if everyone stopped smoking and nobody started. The reduction in the number of smokers has however plateaued, despite ongoing anti smoking campaigns and the establishment of free clinics.Though everyone now knows that smoking is dangerous. Diabetes now consumes up to 5% of the total NHS budget yet nearly 2/3 of Brits and Americans are now either overweight or obese. No body really is unaware that being overweight is unhealthy. The problem is that humans are basically human, and this is why your premise breaks breaks down.

No, that's not what he is saying at all, although our ageing population does of course put a strain on the NHS. The main problem is peoples attitudes. You are 100% correct in saying that prevention is better than a cure, but many people won't listen. They say things like, "we are all going to die anyway so who cares if I smoke, overeat and drink like a fish?" Problem is, they do care, because when they are ill, they coming knocking on the NHS's door where they are treated for problems that could so easily be avoided. The same mentality issue exists with vaccines which are given to prevent some terrible diseases, however some scientifically illiterate parents will insist on listening to scaremongering stories. The funny thing is, well actually it isn't funny because children suffer, but what amazes me is the way some of these parents cannot see the other side of the story. Who is it putting these anti-vaccine stories on the Internet? It's the alternative medicine crew! They want you to instead waste your money on crap that does not work and has been proven not to work! Check this one out: Some of the sCAM brigade use CHELATION (seriously) in an attempt to cure Autism! Some children have actually DIED from this so called treatment. Autism doesn't kill children does it? These are the types of stories that the sCAM crew would rather you didn't hear and this 'treatment' also costs a lot of money. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9074208 I don't wish to embark on a vaccine rant but my point is, peoples mentality and attitudes towards prophylaxis treatment and lifestyle changes. The main threat to people are themselves. Because of the anti vaccine crew we only have a 70% uptake of the HPV vaccine which is nowhere near acceptable.
