HELP?!?- what's the science behind this??? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It seems so obvious at first (as smoking is obviously bad for your health) but I just don't get why? First off, the carbon monoxide in smoke doesn't just displace oxygen, it consumes it. Oxygen is a basic requirement for muscle tissue, such as the heart muscle, to function properly. Second, nicotine causes the blood platelets to become a bit stickier making them easier to bind and clot. If an artery is partially blocked due to plaque build up, a clot can form and cut off the supply of blood. When this happen in an artery supplying blood to the heart muscle, the muscle cramps, which is basically what a heart attack is.

Smoking involves a lot of chemicals that replace the oxygen in your blood. When there is not enough oxygen in your blood because it is crowded with the chemicals from smoking reduces good circulation in your heart.

Well there is a direct connection between the lungs, the heart and the brain. 1. the old blood flows into the lungs. You breathe in. oxygen from the air you breathe refreshes the blood. the carbon dioxide is exhaled. 2.The refreshed blood then flows into the heart 3.The heart then pumps the blood to the brain. Now, when you smoke you inhale about 4,000 nasty chemicals in the cigarette smoke. This is absorbed by the lungs into your blood stream then transported straight to your heart. The heart now pumps the poisoned blood to the brain. The nicotine from the cigarette smoke then works on the brain cells to make them feel relaxed and happy. The blood then flows from the brain to other parts of the body. the nicotine goes away with it. The brain goes -- hey where's the party? Then your fingers reach for another cigarette. If this is repeated over and over again it will have terrible effects on all three of these vital organs. don't smoke.

The actual, mechanistic, scientific reason is that smoking contributes to atherosclerosis, the build of fatty plaques and deposits along the walls of arteries. These atherosclerotic plaques bulge out into the arterial space and impede blood flow. As coronary heart disease (aka ischemic heart disease) is essentially the transient deprivation of oxygen to the tissues of the heart muscle, atherosclerosis causes CHD by allowing less blood to flow through the coronary arteries, causing ischemia and oxygen deprivation, leading to angina and heart attacks.
