Science is working on it as we speak. My father suffered a major heart attack 25 years ago and has had heart disease since. With today's technology doctors have been keeping him alive. He is now 73 yrs. old and still kicking along. As everyday goes by, doctors are learning more and I think we'll see tremendous improvments in our lifetime with heart disease.
2 :
some people are just born with a heart problem like myself.
3 :
eventually science will be able to controll heart disease to a very highlevel but i don't believe that it will ever be completely avoidable because the body is so comlex and reacts with time

if ur dad has high cholesterol, see if hes taking 'lipitor' as one of his medication.. because this medicine helps reduce cholesterol.. also make ure dad eat food which are low in saturated-fat .. some of the examples of low saturated-fat foods are as follows : fat free or 1% dairy products lean meats fish and shellfish skinless poultry whole grain foods fruits vegetables Look for soft margarines (liquid or tub varieties) that are low in saturated fat and contain little or no trans fat (another type of dietary fat that can raise your cholesterol level). hope that helps.....
2 :
see a nutritionist--they are free to see at health departments. Read the labels on food. fruit/vegetables are a good food choice as well as non fried foods.
3 :
I would suggest you visit the american heart association web site for information on a healthy diet, but I also would remind you that only your dad can choose to eat a healthy diet and lead a healthy lifestyle

1 :
High blood pressure can cause heart disease and stroke if left untreated.
2 :
yes it is a silent killer.
3 :
No. High blood pressure is the disease of Blood Vessels secondary to aging process, or constituents of blood e.g. high cholestrol and other raised lipid profile, uric acid etc. This result in narrowing of the lumen due to thickening of the arterial walls. Bacause of the above reason the heart has to pump at faster rate and exert more resulting in heart disease. Please remember the coronaries/ blood vessels of heart are also affected and a fatal out come can take place.
4 :
It can lead to it. Visit the website:
5 :
No. Heart disease can be caused by many systems in your body. It can also simply be caused by changes associated with aging. Heart disease does increase your risk of heart related problems

My father passed away, and the cause was listed as "hypertensive and arteriosclerotic heart disease

My father passed away, and the cause was listed as "hypertensive and arteriosclerotic heart disease"?
He didn't show a new heart attack, only his old healed infarction......so how did he actually die? I will talk to the doctor next week, because he is on vacation, so maybe somebody can help until then.... He was 76 years old, and had type 2 diabetes, stage 4 renal failure, a 15 year old infarct, two previous strokes, and hypertension, all controlled. Also atrial fibrillation.

This was the cause of death? Is there any other info? Hypertension and arteriosclerotic disease doesn't just affect the heart. It affects every organ in the body. The kidneys usually take a hard hit when someone has this. I need more info.
2 :
Hypertension is high blood pressure, which would put more stress than necessary on your organs, and arteriosclerosis is a group of diseases characterized by thickening and loss of elasticity of the artery walls. arterio (artery) + sclerosis (hardening) may include buildup of plaque in the arteries, and if the elasticity is impaired, the heart has a hard time pumping blood to the rest of the body. I think his doctor will tell you his heart just gave out from having to work too hard. It also may have affected his kidneys. I am sorry for your loss.
3 :
Sorry to hear that your father just passed away. Arteriosclerotic Heart Disease is commonly called Hardening of the Arteries. It is the build up inside the coronary arteries of cholesterol, fatty acids calcium, tissue and cells, which is normally referred to as plaque. There is currently no method of detecting this disease in it's early stages so when the first symptoms appear, the disease is normally far advanced. Hypertensive heart disease refers to coronary artery disease, heart failure, and enlargement of the heart that occur because of high blood pressure.High blood pressure increases the pressure in blood vessels. As the heart pumps against this pressure, it must work harder. Over time, this causes the heart muscle to thicken and the left ventricle to become enlarged. The amount of blood pumped by the heart each minute, cardiac output goes down. Without treatment, symptoms of congestive heart failure may develop.Hypertensive heart disease is the leading cause of illness and death from high blood pressure. Take care as always

Does meat eating cause heart disease

Does meat eating cause heart disease?
I have thought for a long time that meat eaters are at risk of heart attacks. The age of people getting heart attacks is getting younger all the time. Vegetarians look younger and are generally healthier.

1 :
yea you can be a salad shooter
2 :
meat is ok as long as you don't over indulge. Also they say its red meat that you shouldn't eat to much as this can cause health problems and to eat more white meat which is alot better for you. xxx
3 :
red meat does, it leads to blood clogs and all sorts of nasty things. but surely you arent a pure carnivore so its ok if you dont over do it and still eat your veggies
4 :
Not just meat eating but also consumption of dairy products.Do a google on The China Study which is a 30 year study on the effects of consuming animal products. Seventh Day Adventists who are mostly vegetarian have an average life span 7 years longer than the general population. So there seems to be quite a bit of evidence to back up many of the health claims which have been floating round for years

what is the pathophysiology behind clubbing of fingers in a child with congenital heart disease

what is the pathophysiology behind clubbing of fingers in a child with congenital heart disease?
how do you explain clubbing?
Medicine - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
clubbing is a result of the child's lack of O2 to the ends of the peripheral system. The child does not have sufficient oxygen carrried in the blood and the toes and fingers can "club" in the process. The physiological process is a thicking in the area to protect the already fragile capillaries and their low oxygen levels.
2 :
The lack of O2 to the distal extremities was the common theory in the past (the idea being the elaboration of things like VEGF in the distal extremities). Now the hot theory is that it's caused by the action of platelet clumps and megakaryocytes that get lodged in the distal capillary beds. The idea is that normally, circulating platelet clumps and megakaryocytes get lodged in and broken up in the pulmonary vasculature. In congenital heart defects that include a right-to-left shunt, these can bypass the lungs and remain in circulation. When they get lodged in the distal capillary beds they release platelet derived growth factor (PDGF) which stimulates collagen production around the capillaries. The theory is also valid for bacterial endocarditis in which platelet clumps can come off from the valvular vegetations (or other thrombogenic foci like aneurysmal plaques

How can we reverse heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States

" How can we reverse heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States ?

1 :
Stop selling greasy foods, eating on a healthy plan, exercising, and spearding the news of heart disease across the nation.
2 :
spend less time on the computer answering questions and exercise more
3 :
You really can't reverse it. You prevent it! There are many factors - exercise, cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride levels etc. They need to be managed to be right.
4 :
Don't smoke and change your diet. There are statin drugs to control cholesterol which clogs the arteries. Get regular check-ups.
5 :
I am NOT a doctor, just study a lot.Not medical advise. #1 - Fish Oil - 1 Tbs per 100 lbs Not capsules (12 capsules = 1 Tbs) Carlson's lemon flavor. Vitamin E - 800 units daily Natural E only mixed tocopherols Cut out simple carbs - sugar, white flour, potatoes, sodas processed foods. No bad fats -No hydrogenated, partial hydrogenated, vegatable oils. Use olive oil or even better coconut oil(I know what you're thinking but research it) ***Glyconutrients***** Check this out
6 :
Heart disease can be reversed by changing one's own lifestyle. Consume less sugar, fat and oil (stop overeating), do more exercise, stop mental stress and strain, stop cigarette smoking especially after 25 years of age. Please see the webpages for more details on Heart disease.
7 :
One has to focus on the modifiable risk factors like the following: 1.) Diet - avoid foods that will increase triglycerides and low-density lipoproteins (which are considered bad cholesterol). Eat foods that have good cholesterol (HDL or High density lipoprotein). Also lower sodium intake since sodium causes the blood vessels to be more stiff or more resistant, raising one's blood pressure which will lead to hypertension. 2.) Moderate Exercise - research shows that moderate exercise not only increases blood flow to blood vessels, organs and tissues but it also increases burning of fat and decrease one's chances of developing Diabetes Mellitus which has been linked to heart disease due to atherosclerosis. 3.) Avoid smoking - nicotine causes vasospasm (constricts blood vessels) that may decrease myocardial oxygen supply. 4.) Alcohol - there are also research that suggest that drinking red wine in MODERATION is good for the heart since it tends to increase blood flow to the heart by dilating the blood vessels.

Education and awareness needs to be addressed for this disease. Heart Disease must be a topic for each month of the year, not just have one month designated to think about it in a year. To get the word out, schools must have assemblies about them and classes that teach children about heart disease too. Communities need to address this growing problem and have open forums regularly through out the year for the public to attend that is free. Unfortunately all the education and awareness is worthless if people don't choose to listen and actively change their behaviors. The choice is up to each individual to make. If someone chooses not to do anything about it, they won't. We can't force anyone to do something they don't want to do. People have the right of choice. That is what our country is all about. It is called freedom of choice. We may not agree with them or they us, but we each make our own choices in our lives. Some people want to change while others don't. But that shouldn't stop us from educating people anyway. That is my opinion. Good luck!
9 :
This will require a major paradigm change in the US. Consumers have to begin rejecting cheap fast food that is awful for their bodies and decide to spend more money on wholesome foods. US lifestyle plays a major role. We do everything so fast, are such a time pressured country that we eat the same way, not wanting to spend time preparing wholesome foods and opting for Big Macs and pizza delivery. The bigger is better culture that we seem to have here also plays in to this- everything is supersized and now we are as well. How to reverse the cultural changes that have fostered this epidemic? Start with our kids- education- changing school lunch programs. Emphasizing physical exercise. Building safer neighborhoods so our kids can walk to school. Get rid of TV ads that promote junk food and junk eating- we did it with tobacco, why not junk food? Set better examples for our kids. Get early screening for kids- heart disease is creeping into the pediatric population. Its a hugely complex problem, that will increasingly cripple our country if we don't deal with it now
