I believe it is considered a condition and not a disease. The condition no longer exits after repair and recovery.

It's considered a congenital heart condition (one you are born with). It can be repaired and the patient can have no more symptoms, but the person needs to have regularly scheduled check ups, because he/she is at risk for other problems with the heart (like valve disorders). It should be mentioned that the person was born with this and had it repaired in visits with any other doctor, as well as reported on any health forms.

It is considered a congenital heart disease. A disease by definition is an abnormal condition of an organism that impairs bodily functions. After it is repaired, however, it would no longer be a disease.

The person above who said it is a congenital disease is correct. An ASD can be undiagnosed until adulthood depending on how large it is and if it is causing symptoms. Around 20% of people have an ASD called a patent foramen ovale (PFO) which results from a failure of the fossa ovalis to close at birth. Heart disease is a fairly generic term but a repaired ASD can still be considered a heart disease. The person above who said you need to have regular follow-up with a cardiologist is correct. Just because the defect is repaired DOES NOT mean that you are cured. It is possible for the Dacron patch (what they typically use to repair an ASD) to leak over time. Please speak to your cardiologist or doctor if you have any concerns
