The most effective treatment of coronary heart disease depends on the severity if the signs and symptoms. Treatment ranges depending on the severity of the condition between enhancing your current physical health by diet and exercise and a heart transplant. In between you would find medication, controlling other risk factors and invasive surgeries. One of the most common and effective methods used for treatment and diagnosis is cardiac catheterization and angioplasty.
2 :
Bottom line - listen to your consultant, ask for stuff in writing, read it two or three times. You will NOT remember or comprehend everything when you talk to your consultant - and they know it and will not be offended for you seeking print and clarification. The treatment is decided upon by you and the medical team.
3 :
depends on your heart condition i take medication and have a pacemaker.
4 :
medication where it is indicated and surgery where it is indicated
5 :
The most appropriate therapy for CAD will vary depending on the severity of the blockages and also the number of blockages. Therapy with medications, lifestyle modification and possibly intervention to fix the blockages is the best action in most cases. The intervention to fix blockages can either be angioplasty with or without stent placement or surgery known as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG.) The decision to perform angioplasty vs. surgery vs. medical therapy is dependent on the location of the blockages, the percentage of the blockages and the total number of blockages. CABG is preferred for left main artery disease, multivessel disease, in Diabetics and when the blockages are not accessible by angioplasty. Some people are not candidates for any of these procedures and are managed only medically. Medical management and lifestyle modification is very important in all patients with CAD. There are several medical therapies that are associated with a reduction in future heart attacks and other vascular events and also overall mortality. These medical therapies include blood thinners (Aspirin, Clopidogrel), beta blockers, ace inhibitors and cholesterol lowering medications. Lifestyle modification is also vitally important in reducing the future risk of heart attacks and death. This includes dietary modification, such as a low saturated fat, low cholesterol diet that is high in omega 3 fatty acids. Regular aerobic exercise is also important but should be under the supervision of a physician initially perhaps in a cardiac rehab program

Well I was going to look up information from the Heart Association but then it occurred to me... remember how the government over the past few years created a mandate against restaurtants using transfats in their cooking oils. That is a prime example of an action taken by the government in order to lower the rate of heart disease. Btw, even MacDonalds had to change their french fry cooking oil...

Why are those who applaud cigarette taxes, opposed to "fat taxes", a leading cost to society via heart disease

Why are those who applaud cigarette taxes, opposed to "fat taxes", a leading cost to society via heart disease?

Lets tax liberals more...they are more in favor of taxes after all. As for cigarettes, I say SMOKE EM IF YA GOT EM!!!!!! >:-D
2 :
I'm against all "sin" taxation.
3 :
I think both are ridiculous.
4 :
Maybe it's because not all fat people have heart disease. And because not all people with heart disease are fat. I have an aunt who's had heart problems all her life, and she's as thin as a pole. .
5 :
Investigate the cost of treating diabetics if you want to be shocked. It costs waaay more than any tobacco related illnesses. Junk food should be taxed 900 %
6 :
Very Good Answer. Libs shd pay our taxes, Wonderful.
7 :
Because its a wayyyyyy different story! My sister is fat and that girl takes care of her self. She eats right and goes to the gym every other day. But i guess she will never be skinny. Shes always have a thick aspect about her. So why tax something other pepole dont have control of? See ciggarettes you have a choice to kill your self/ ruin your life/ your health so why not tax idiots?, for pepole like my sister they dont have a choice but to accept the fact there not thin.
8 :
I never applaud any new taxes. I think they're a form of tyranny. Remember this nation opposes governmental tyranny. I also oppose new spending, for the same reason.
9 :
I support the Fat Tax because the best way to utopia is through elimination of inferior humans. Taxes are a good way of making money, and fat people ought to be turned into Solyent Green so they can be redistributed. Therefore, fat taxes are a win-win situation.
10 :
I am against all sin taxes.
11 :
I, for one, am not.
12 :
I am against sin taxes also. If there was a "fat tax", that would include pretty much everything the average American eats.
13 :
Because often those who are in the poorer income bracket can't afford all these nice, organic, healthy foods. ($5 for a peach?) These "fat taxes" are only going to sink the lower class deeper.
14 :
Because almost all of the people who wanted the cigarette tax didn't smoke, and they were told it would replace other taxes. The fat tax on the other hand, can not be avoided by simply not doing an activity; you have to comply with the government's standard for what is overweight and how the government measures it (body mass index, scale, etc.).
15 :
Smoking is not genetic, while obesity has a strong genetic link. You can tax "bad foods" all day long, yet some people will always be prone to obesity. In fact, the ability to lay down fat stores is a huge (pun intended) reason why the human race dominates every other species. *****Anyone who votes for a senator/representative/president who raises taxes should be the only ones paying those taxes. Otherwise, you have taxation w/o representation.*****
16 :
as far as punk roc goes lets see the republicans pay for the iraq war via taxes since they needed it so bad? i question if they would have supported it in a pay as you go program, it has been said that the levys in new orleans needed improvements and was a shovel ready project and bush pulled funds to fund his war then the hurricane came and major flooding happened. the natl guard was in iraq and homeland security failed, they wanted to contract everything to make a buck. the fact is texass is the most obese state in america and our food industry is killing us for profits. do not forget under bush the nicotine levels in cigarettes rose another 8% this after Dem's had hearings with tobacco industry leaders who lied about the health effects of cigarettes.
17 :
In my case it's because smokers endanger the health of everyone they smoke around, and not all overweight people suffer from heart disease. Also poor people tend to be overweight because unhealthy food is cheaper. Taxing the poor for getting fat off of the food they can afford is wrong

You could choose one particular issue with heart disease instead of taking heart disease as a whole (which encompasses a great many things). Such as Arrhythmia and why it can be so dangerous. Or you could write about the need and use for pacemakers in certain heart patients. Or you could write about the connection between high blood pressure and heart disease. There are other issues you could choose from such as aneurysm, angina, palpitations and heart attacks. OR what might be really interesting, is to discuss the difference of heart disease as it relates to men vs. women (the fatality rate, the percentages of who it affects, at what stage in life it occurs, etc.)

Go here. You can get tons of ideas and information about all kinds of heart disease! http://www.webmd.com/

This Patient Guide is written for the loved ones of heart patients who are dealing with the short-term stress that comes with a test, procedure or recent diagnosis of heart disease. It explains why support is so important to a loved one with heart disease. It also offers practical strategies on how to support a loved one while also taking care of yourself

What does peridontal disease do to your heart? Is it reversible

What does peridontal disease do to your heart? Is it reversible?
I just went through a procedure at the dentist which injected antibiotic under the gumline. It seemed to cure my bleeding and peridontal disease. But what has it done to my heart and lungs? Any ideas? I seem to be more short-winded on longer jogs. Any connection?

There is a incidence of periodontal infections travelling via you blood to you heart causing among other things pericarditis - inflammation of the pericardial sac of the heart which is quite serious. Having said that you would probably have other symptoms such as chest pain, fever etc.... to go along with the shortness of breath. If your really worried about whats going on you need to have a talk with your Dr.
2 :
i dont know, but they say you must brush your teeth before bed because your mouths germs somehow can adversly affect your heart that way
3 :
First of all there is no cure for periodontal disease, once you have it you always have it due to the irreversible nature of lost bone. However we can arrest it, or keep it from getting worse. The Antibiotic under your gum-line can help kill some of the bacteria, however you have to do your part as well by having diligent homecare techniques. As for your heart, the bacteria that are found in the oral environment can travel via your blood stream to the heart and possibly infect your heart. This is called infective endocarditis which you can look up on the net. You prob. are fine, but if you continue to have problems than see your doctor. The short-windedness prob. has nothing to do with your recent perio treatment. The best thing for you to do to prevent your perio from getting worse is do your brushing, flossing, proxy brush use, and rinsing with listerine or peridex. Make sure that you see your dentist every three months to make sure that you are not getting worse. Any bleeding or inflamm in your mouth is a sign that you have infection present, which means that your perio has not been arrested, which means it could be getting worse

Why are vegetarians least likely to have heart disease and/or cancer

Why are vegetarians least likely to have heart disease and/or cancer?

Vegetarian & Vegan - 14 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
don't know maybe it's because..
2 :
because they eat healthy they dont eat all of the fatty and life threatning foods. a big reason is because they dont eat meat. meat such as beef, pork, chicken, etc is sure to give you cancer, heart attacks, and death. they are careful on what they put into their bodies and this is why they tend to live longer.
3 :
Maybe because they got lucky and heart disease, cancer etc. doesn't run in their families.
4 :
Heart disease: Meat is high in cholesterol and saturated fat, so fatty substances (“plaques”) build up inside the walls of arteries. This makes it much harder for blood to flow to the heart. Also, high cholesterol levels contribute to heart disease and vegetarian diets are usually low in cholesterol. http://goveg.com/heartdisease.asp Cancer: Some researchers believe that animal protein causes cancer. "Dr. T. Colin Campbell, arguably the foremost epidemiological researcher alive today, argues that animal proteins are the prime carcinogen in meat and dairy products. Says Dr. Campbell, '[H]uman studies also support this carcinogenic effect of animal protein, even at usual levels of consumption. … No chemical carcinogen is nearly so important in causing human cancer as animal protein.'" http://goveg.com/cancer.asp
5 :
Our food industry gives our livestock a lot of hormones and antibiotics, and eating excessive amounts of meat (more than 4oz. a day) and dairy has been associated with heart disease and diabetes as much as 40 years ago. Vegetarians do not expose themselves to growth hormones and antibiotics given to our cattle and livestock, and are more likely to be concerned about the food they eat so are more likely to eat organic and avoid pesticides from plants as well.
6 :
.Nobody knows what causes most cancers, and there's no evidence that any foods or diets cause or prevent cancer. It's sort of received wisdom that vegetarians are less likely to have cancer, but I've yet to see the results of any peer-reviewed studies that indicate that this is the case. I'm vegan and I've had cancer. Through support networks I've met three other vegans with cancer - one of them a lifelong vegan - and dozens of vegetarians with cancer. The reason most of those who get cancer are meat-eaters is that most people are meat-eaters. What doctors are prepared to say is that a diet HIGH in meat MAY contribute to colon cancer.
7 :
Vegetarians will be less likely to have heart disease because the consumption of fats from protein will clog their heart valves and give the person a higher cholesterol. Vegetarians are less prone to obesity, too, a precluding factor of heart disease. There are also a myriad of other reasons, too, but these are the most obvious of them. Regarding cancer and vegetarianism, there are less hormones in the vegetarian diet leading to less exposure (i.e, fewer instances of breast cancer, prostate cancer). Grilled meats also have nitrates and have been predicted to cause cancer. Hope this was helpful!
8 :
Because they aren't clogging the arteries with fat,or absorbing the chemicals contained in process meat to delay aging.
9 :
Is it because they are more likely to die from some form of malnourishment? Research into the benefits of a vegetarian diet are continuing, and any published papers should be regarded with skepticism and not taken as gospel.
10 :
meat is bad for your heart!
11 :
"because they eat healthy they dont eat all of the fatty and life threatning foods. a big reason is because they dont eat meat. meat such as beef, pork, chicken, etc is sure to give you cancer, heart attacks, and death. they are careful on what they put into their bodies and this is why they tend to live longer." - baby you can google me. No, it is not 'sure to give you cancer, heart attacks and death." The majority of meat eaters are not conscious of the sort of meat they are eating, so they eat more processed kinds of meat. I am not a vegetarian but am very healthy because i eat the right sorts of fish, chicken and meat products in conjunction with a good lifestyle.
12 :
welcome to 2008. everything causes cancer these days. tomorrow, they'll probably tell us to stop brushing our teeth becuase bad breath helps defend against cancer. it's getting a bit ridiculous in my opinion. these studies need to be taken with a grain of salt. heart disease is genetic. you're born with it. cutting meat out of your diet won't get rid of it. the reason vegetarians are typically healthier is becuase they are more conscious about what they're eating. but if you compare a meat eater and vegetarian with well-balanced diets and regular exercise, you will see that neither is healthier than the other.
13 :
Remember, it's less likely, not unlikely. lo-mcg's case shows that vegans can and do get cancer, but there are many factors, such as environmental pollutants and a family history of heart disease and/or cancer that can hit even the healthiest eater. Animal foods have cholesterol and saturated fat, while plant foods have no cholesterol, and those that have saturated fat have less than animal foods. Animal foods also have no fiber, while plant foods tend to be sources of fiber. Fiber can at least reduce digestive cancers and has other beneficial properties. Veg*ans tend to eat more fruits and vegetables, which have antioxidants. Those also have protective properties. Some herbs and spices, pound for pound, have even more antioxidants, and nuts are also thought to be rich in antioxidants. All this makes it less likely that veg*ans will wind up with heart disease/cancer, but that doesn't mean a whole lot if you're the one with cancer.
14 :
Heart disease is caused by the clogging of the arteries near the heart with that of fat and cholesterol from animal products. Another of the many proofs that humans are not designed for eating such things -- as this does not happen in meat eaters. Cancer? Well, cancer develops in your body. You cannot 'catch' cancer, it develops slowly over time. Vegetarians tend to not eat animal products, tend to not smoke, tend to not drink, tend to be interested in general overall health etc. So, of course this will lead to an overall healthier body which will have a lesser chance of developing cancer. But, of course, there is also air pollution, ground and water pollution, radiation... who knows what all over the place that contributes to ill health that leads to cancer developing. But at least you won't be knowingly and directly doing it to yourself such as smokers do

Is Atrial Septal Defect considered as a heart disease? I mean even after it is repaired and completely covered

Is Atrial Septal Defect considered as a heart disease? I mean even after it is repaired and completely covered

Heart Diseases - 4 Answers

1 :
I believe it is considered a condition and not a disease. The condition no longer exits after repair and recovery.
2 :
It's considered a congenital heart condition (one you are born with). It can be repaired and the patient can have no more symptoms, but the person needs to have regularly scheduled check ups, because he/she is at risk for other problems with the heart (like valve disorders). It should be mentioned that the person was born with this and had it repaired in visits with any other doctor, as well as reported on any health forms.
3 :
It is considered a congenital heart disease. A disease by definition is an abnormal condition of an organism that impairs bodily functions. After it is repaired, however, it would no longer be a disease.
4 :
The person above who said it is a congenital disease is correct. An ASD can be undiagnosed until adulthood depending on how large it is and if it is causing symptoms. Around 20% of people have an ASD called a patent foramen ovale (PFO) which results from a failure of the fossa ovalis to close at birth. Heart disease is a fairly generic term but a repaired ASD can still be considered a heart disease. The person above who said you need to have regular follow-up with a cardiologist is correct. Just because the defect is repaired DOES NOT mean that you are cured. It is possible for the Dacron patch (what they typically use to repair an ASD) to leak over time. Please speak to your cardiologist or doctor if you have any concerns

How does smoking cause heart disease? And what heart disease does it cause

How does smoking cause heart disease? And what heart disease does it cause?

Heart Diseases - 4 Answers

1 :
Well, my grandfather died of a heart attack and that was from smoking. It causes coronary heart disease which leads to heart attack. It increases blood pressure and the likelihood of blood clotting and even decreases "good" cholesterol. not good.
2 :
Cigerratte or any other somke contain many hazardous substance, in the devepoment of heart disease, these substances play an important role. Our blood vessels have endothelial cells on the inner side of the blood vessel. These cells inhibits clotting of our blood inside the vessel. Substances in the smoke damage the walls of our vessles by damaging the endothelial cells. When the endothelial cells are damaged, cholestrol and fats get accumulated beneath the endothelial layer. This causes a bulge inside the vessel, so this bulge narrows the lumen of the vessel this reduces the blood supply to the area which that blood vessel is supplying so if that blood vessel is supplying the heart , this leads to Angina. And if that bulge completely obstructs the vessel lumen, or that bulge brusts inside the vessle causing clot formation inside the blood vessel, then it leads to Myocardial Infraction (Commonly know as Heart Attack). Smoking doesn't only cause heart diseases, but it causes certain cancers, and respiratory diseases. List is too long to be mentioned. So if you smoke quit smoking immediately and strat regular exercise. You'll not get Heart Attack.
3 :
Tobacco smoke — Smokers' risk of developing coronary heart disease is 2–4 times that of nonsmokers. Cigarette smoking is a powerful independent risk factor for sudden cardiac death in patients with coronary heart disease; smokers have about twice the risk of nonsmokers. Cigarette smoking also acts with other risk factors to greatly increase the risk for coronary heart disease. People who smoke cigars or pipes seem to have a higher risk of death from coronary heart disease (and possibly stroke) but their risk isn't as great as cigarette smokers'. Exposure to other people's smoke increases the risk of heart disease even for nonsmokers.
4 :
It is very well known cause ! Smoking makes all arteries hard and it promotes cholesterol deposition inside the wall of artery and hence it increases blood pressure also !It accelerates heart rate !If you will count pulse rate of smoker than you will find it is higher than normal !Smoking of some filtered cigarette do give late injuries and less injuries but it do give ! Smokers are 2 to 4 fold more prone to have brain strokes and heart attack and also gangrene of the foot so long that they have to under go amputation ! One of my patient sufferers burger's disease and suffered amputation ! Renaud disease also happens in legs ! smoking gives deposits of carbon particles in the lungs and may give rise cancer of lungs !SO this is how it effects ! Don't smOKe for pleasure ok ! Always YouRsmE
