Does HDL cholesterol affect your chance of developing heart disease

Does HDL cholesterol affect your chance of developing heart disease?

Your doctor says you need to lower your low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, what's often called the "bad" cholesterol. You're working hard at that goal, but now your doctor says it's important to raise your high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, which is known as the "good" cholesterol. It might sound like a mixed message, but this one-two punch — reducing LDL cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol — is a great way to lower your risk of heart disease. Cholesterol is a waxy substance that's found in all of your cells and has several healthy functions, including helping to build your body's cells and playing a role in the production of sex hormones. It's carried through your bloodstream attached to proteins. These proteins are called lipoproteins. The message to lower LDL cholesterol is loud and clear — but it might not be enough for people at high risk of heart disease. So doctors are beginning to turn their attention to HDL cholesterol. The evidence so far looks good that increasing HDL cholesterol reduces your risk of dying of heart disease. Cholesterol levels are measured in milligrams (mg) of cholesterol per deciliter (dL) of blood, or millimoles (mmol) per liter (L). When it comes to HDL cholesterol, think high. Most people should aim for an HDL level of 60 mg/dL (1.6 mmol/L) or above. An HDL level below 40 mg/dL (1.0 mmol/L) increases the risk of heart disease. For the average man, HDL cholesterol ranges from 40 to 50 mg/dL (1.0 to 1.3 mmol/L). Thanks to female sex hormones — which have a positive effect on HDL cholesterol — the average woman fares better, with HDL cholesterol ranging from 50 to 60 mg/dL (1.3 to 1.6 mmol/L). But both men and women can benefit from increasing these levels. If you don't know your HDL level, ask your doctor for a baseline cholesterol test. If your HDL value isn't within a desirable range, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes to boost your HDL cholesterol. The problem may still be important — and worth the time spent in an emergency room to have your HDL cholesterol evaluated by a doctor. Take care always! OIRAM

How much will a person with a pre-existing condition like heart disease or diabetes be legally required to

How much will a person with a pre-existing condition like heart disease or diabetes be legally required to?
pay each month.....and why do I have a feeling NOBODY knows? You DO know that since the Dems stripped out the part that limits how high the rates can go, they could theory charge a million dollars a month for these people, right....and the law would be saying to the patient you have to pay it! I understand they could already charge what they want.....but the diabetic was not forced under penalty of law to get the policy. Now she is.

Companies could already charge a million dollars a month. And like in real life (not in tv land), these companies compete. Charge 1 million if you want, but then someone else will just get your business. Check out the free market system sometimes. Private companies will compete or go bankrupt.
2 :
High risk pools will be created for adults with pre-existing conditions to buy into until 2014 when they will also not be denied or have rates adjusted for pre-existing conditions.
3 :
We all will pay, get ready for Premium acceleration. Just remember the needs of the few out number then needs of the many.
4 :
It depends on your income. Its a sliding scale on who gets subsidized by the government. The main goal is that no one under the 250,000 mark is expected to pay more than 10% of your income toward medical expenses. In many cases, even those that apply for aid won't get it cause they will never spend that much normally on health care. Think about it. A family making 150,000 a year will most likely not spend 15,000 dollars on medical expenses. Even then, if they do, there are certain things that you may not be able to claim depending on how they set it up. Yes that is right you have to pay for it still. It isn't free. anything above about 44,000 for a single individual, you pay 10%. For a family of four the full 10% is around 88,000. Lowest income brackets will pay around 3 to 4% AFTER health credits. Below that its a sliding scale between 14,000 to around 30,000 for a Single individual. in any case none of that starts until 2014. Until then you pay full price for it. If it comes to a point where you are so poor the government decides you can't pay, you go on medicare. mumbling is correct they can't single you out for a rate increase based on your conditions, they CAN however increase the rate they would normally charge someone with a pre-existing condition for everyone. And since the government is going to pick up the overcharge for lower income families, I see no reason why they would not do that.
5 :
From the bill: "Insurers will be prohibited from denying coverage OR SETTING RATES based on gender, health status, MEDICAL CONDITION, claims experience, genetic information, evidence of domestic violence, or other health-related factors. Premiums will vary only by family structure, geography, actuarial value, tobacco use, participation in a health promotion program, and age (by not more than three to one). In summary, the bill states that your rates cannot be determined by your health condition or medical condition. For a detailed 16 page summary of the bill go to http://dpc.senate.gov/healthreformbill/healthbill52.pdf
6 :
the sky is the limit, as the bill did not limit premiums, and it also gave the big pharm companies an extended time for marketing name brands to 12 yrs! So there goes the 4 generics and there goes the insurance rates. welcome to socialism

What's are the chances of a baby with congenital heart disease to survive

Your question is as vague as asking "What are the chances of me coming back home after I leave for office in the morning?". There are atleast 50 different type of congenital heart diseases. Each of them carry different prognosis. If you are lucky, you may have simple CHD like Atrial Septal Defect, which has got the best prognosis. If you are unlucky, you may have Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, which is almost always fatal.' So, it really depends on the type pf CHD.
2 :
There are several kinds of Cyanotic and Non-cyanotic congenital heart diseases. Some defects are to be corrected by different stages of surgery. The survival can be predicted only after knowing the existing heart defect and the severity of the condition. Consult the Cardiologist (Pediatrics).
3 :
If the leak is severe, the tricuspid valve can be treated surgically either by repair or replacement. See www.americanheart.org. for good information on this condition. It is imperative the infant be seen by a cardiologist and that you seek treatment. If the valve abnormality is especially severe, the infant will have decreased stamina, fatigue, cyanosis, and sometimes fluid retention.
4 :
it all depends really. my son was born with TGA, VSD, IAA, and PS. He also has AS now. He's had 3 open heart surgeries and numerous other procedures and more to come. He is going to be 8 in november and is doing GREAT! we have been blessed with amazing doctors

What are the four risk factors of heart disease and could you explain them

What are the four risk factors of heart disease and could you explain them?

Being overweight, being male, being african American and leading a sedentary lifestyle. Overweight and sedentary are controllable risk factors and the other two are non-modifiable. Although if this is a homework question you probably want to answer it out of your book because there are many more than four risk factors of heart disease.
2 :
i know that stress and food with fats can cause heart disease, these combined with no physical exercise and a bad diet and bad gens, it could be genetic as well.
3 :
There are nine risk factors: age (65+), gender (male), heredity (including race), high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, physical inactivity, obesity, and smoking. See the American Heart Association website for more information. www.americanheart.org
4 :
You see you sort out which age group you want to explain the risk factors. Let presume we are having a class of teenagers at this age they are care free, so start with: 1)Alcoholism. 2)Smoking. 3) Lack of physical activity resulting in obesity. 4) Than very politely, tell them about hereditary. In mature people you can speak on diabetes and its relation to heart disease.
5 :
It is (1)High blood pressure(2)Smoking (3)Diabetes(4)Hyperlipidemia (5) Genetic history(6)Psychological tension and stress.Always YouRsmE

I am not a doctor by any means at all, but I do have heart disease. I was born with Situs Inversus Totalis, Dextrocardia, and Tetrology of Fallot ( I don't know if I spelled any of those correctly ). More recently I was diagnosed with an enlarged aorta and a moderate valve leak. Also more recently (See a pattern here?) I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. This was put into remission (because it is not curable) and I have to have a colonoscopy every six months and an endoscopy every other 6 months, both of which require anesthesia. The first time I was ever put "under" (it's referred to as conscious sedation) my heart rate rose and they stopped the procedure. In the future they have given me antibiotics one hour before the procedure and I have been fine every time. Again, I have absolutely no idea if someone else would have problems, but I seem to have somewhat of a comparable problem with my heart (if not more problems) and I was fine after the antibiotic stage. Please make sure with your doctor and do not assume I am 100% correct.
2 :
you keep asking this question sweetie. listen to the doctor's advice about your dad; they have evaluated him and can give you the best information about what the best treatment options are for his condition

Is it possible to get cardiovascular/heart disease because of weight loss

Is it possible to get cardiovascular/heart disease because of weight loss?
5 to 10 pounds of weight loss* Like 5 to 10 pounds 5 to 10 pounds of weight loss*

1 :
not with 5-10#, unless already anorexic, loss of electrolytes/ potassium, calcium affect heart function/nervous system etc.
2 :
Weight loss occur when you have hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism may cause heart palpitations (cardiac arrhythmia).
3 :
5 or 10lbs loss if you are overweight will reduce your risks. Only starvation which can cause cardiac muscle break down can increase your risks.
4 :
It actually can in theory if that 5-10 pounds in weight reduction has left you drastically underweight. I guess it depends how over/underweight you were in the first place? But generally no, weight loss of that amount is unlikely to cause any problems to the heart unless you are severely underweight. If this is the case then being very underweight can cause arrhythmia's, drastic drop in HR and blood pressure, blood flow would be reduced as well as cholesterol levels rising and damage to the heart muscle due to heart muscle break down would occur.
