People with a wide variety heart diseases are prescribed drugs preventing cloth (thrombus) formation. These cloths are mainly generated in the veins of the lower limb (so-called DVTs - Deep Venous Thrombosis) or inside the heart (mural thrombi). The main fear of, in the first instance, generating DVTs are that they detach from their initial site of generation (embolism) and flows elsewhere, blocking the blood supply leading to infarcts. Regarding DVTs, most of them tend to block the lung (pulmonary) circulation, leading so-called pulmonary embolism, a potential lethal complication of DVT. Mural thombi on the other hand rather tend to block the cerebral (brain) vessels, leading to a stroke, or in some cases they may block the renal (kidney) arteries or other organs arteries. And now comes the main point, or at least one of the main points; HOW are these thrombi FORMED? Thrombi tend to be formed where: 1) The blood flow is abnormal / low (as in the legs of old people) 2) Where you have damaged blood vessels (endothelial/endocardial damage) 3) Or poor contraction (applies for the mural thrombi) And now to the next main point; WHAT DRUGS might be used to avoid these cloth formations? 1) We might use drugs regulating the heart contractions, avoiding mural thrombus formation in a very FEW cases. 2) But we generally use what is commonly called "Blood thinners", medicines which lowers the ability of the blood forming these viscous cloths, both in the heart and elsewhere. Common names are Heparin and Coumarin. And now to the last main point; What are the RISKS? First of all it should be said that the advantages of taking such medicines by far (generally) are superior to the disadvantages if prescribed correctly. Among common side-effects are a increased bleeding tendency, and in a VERY few cases we might see extremely rare (acute) complications as Heparin-induced thrombocytopaenia and such. However, if treated correctly according to the protocol, you wont see much to any sort of complication!

Like all drugs, they damage the body in many ways. Sometimes it is necessary to take drugs to prevent a dangerous event, such as a blood clot if the body is damaged, etc. Sometimes things like beta blockers are necessary to save a person's life in E.R. cardiac unit, but to use these drugs long term is not wise and down right dangerous. Blood thinners can cause a person to bleed to death if they get a major cut and are taking them because the blood simply will not clot to stop the bleeding. It is always best to focus on making yourself healthy and not just treating a symptom like most doctors do for a chronic problem. People with heart disease have a history of eating poorly and not taking good care of their health. To rely on modern medicine to correct the problem is to take a pill for life support. By changing your diet to a healthy one, getting good exercise, and learning what truly causes heart disease and then approaching a sensible regimen that addresses a focus on health, one can truly become healthy and avoid heart disease and the complications of it. good luck to you
