Poverty in childhood has long-term negative health effects. Those who were born into poor families smoke or drink as someone who did not complete high school and went on to find employment in manual blue-collar occupations. Poverty is a greater predictor of heart disease than risk factors such as smoking, obesity, stress, or blood cholesterol concentrations. * Rheumatic fever is common worldwide and is responsible for many cases of damaged heart valves. It is common in developing countries and not common in the United States. Rheumatic heart disease affects children and young people living in conditions of poverty, poor sanitation and overcrowding. * Poor people can not afford for congenital heart repair surgeries for their ailing children due to huge hospital charges.(For example: War-torn countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine.) * People who are at higher risk for obesity include lower income groups. Obesity is a risk factor for hypertension, diabetes and heart diseases.
