What is coronary heart disease and what causes it?

Coronary heart disease or Coronary Artery Disease as it is commonly known is disease of the arteries attached to outside of the heart which become inflamed and blocked to varying degrees, however a total blockage causes a heart attack(myocardial infarction). Coronary artery disease has many causes such as genetics, smoking, high fat diet, high cholesterol diet, sedentary lifestyle, hyperlipidemia and many more The best way to avoid coronary artery disease is to eat a heart healthy diet, don't smoke, get exercise daily, control your weight and if you are an at risk person have regular check-ups.
2 :
Blood flow patterns and flow related stresses through the cardiovascular tree contribute to the pathogenesis of a number of disorders and the characterisation of health risks. Complex flows present in arteries are considered to be one of the primary factors involved in the initiation and propagation of atherosclerosis and arterial stenosis. In coronary arteries, where the geometry influences the generation of secondary flows, arterial plaque tends to localise along the inner curvatures of bends and the near sites of bifurcations. Flow patterns present in human arterial systems and the impact of external factors such as smoking and food diet that affect the physiological reactions of the cardiovascular system are thought to play an important role in the initiation and propagation of atherosclerosis and arterial stenosis.. A heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when an area of heart muscle dies or is permanently damaged because of an inadequate supply of oxygen to that area. Most heart attacks are caused by a clot that blocks one of the coronary arteries (the blood vessels that bring blood and oxygen to the heart muscle). The clot usually forms in a coronary artery that has been previously narrowed from changes related to atherosclerosis. The atherosclerotic plaque (buildup) inside the arterial wall sometimes cracks, and this triggers the formation of a clot, also called a thrombus. A clot in the coronary artery interrupts the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart muscle, leading to the death of heart cells in that area. The damaged heart muscle loses its ability to contract, and the remaining heart muscle needs to compensate for that weakened area

I have terminal heart disease what dose it that mean?

your gonna die from it.
2 :
Well, it CAN be fatal, but there are things that can be done. Unfortunately a heart transplant if probably the most likely solution. Also, by the sound of it, you are pretty young for a heart disease, it's possible that you could get a boost on a waiting list.
3 :
Your mom and dad don't want to tell you because they love you and don't want you to worry because terminal heart disease is a serious illness. Your mom and dad probably told the doctor not to tell you. I will pray for you that you get well.
4 :
Its too hard to say since I dont know what your diagnosis is. My advice is to sit your parents down and ask them to tell you. It probably is serious, but don't worry, there are treatment options for every kind of heart problem. Best of luck!!
5 :
Terminal = end. As in you will meet your maker.
6 :
It means its fatal, and unless you like get a heart transplant your going to die in the near future.
7 :
To have a terminal disease is that you will eventually die from the disease if you do not have any interventions/surgeries. Here's the thing though. I also have heart disease that is considered terminal although I plan on living a happy healthy life well into my 70s or 80s. I have had four heart surgeries and right now my doctors say I won't need another surgery until I am 40 (I am 19 right now). When I am 40 I will have another surgery, possibly a transplant and that could extend my life for about another 10 years and then I could either have more transplants or a mechanical heart. The thing is there are so many new surgeries and technologies that heart disease that could be termed terminal may not be terminal. I suggest you talk to your parents. I regret that you had to come ask people on yahoo answers for that type of information as I am sure it will be very scary for you to learn this way. If you need support there are two wonderful net communities. www.cchaforlife.orh (Canada) and www.achaheart.com (US) they will have even more people with these types of problems

You should eat a lot of fiber and fruit. Actually if you look on the post brand cereal it has a heart healthy way to loose weight. What you do is eat the post cereal brand for two meals a day with a cup of fruit, then eat a healthy dinner. Fish has good fat for the heart, or eat something that you like. I have tried this diet with a daily exercises program such as walking, or yoga and I lost a lot of weight! I hope you are feeling okay and good luck with your weight lost!
2 :
Eat lots of fruits, fibres and try to fast. you might get weak for a few days but your body will recover Do simple workout regulary like walking around your neighbourhood everyday for half an hour. do weights or join low impact martial art (taichi) Be patient.....i know you can do it. Dont be too ambitious....set a lower targets like 10 pounds in a month.... hope this will help. Cant wait to hear good news from you soon!!!
3 :
just eat healthy food (no junk food) like fruits and vegetable and avoid greasy food or meat. for the exercise part, dont be too hard on yourself and walk a long distance with a waterbottle in ur hand just in case. if it gets worse go to ur doctor and c it he's any help.
4 :
You would want to talk to your doctor about what is right for you and do a stress test on what exercises you can do. Best exercise I found that can be done on all levels. Go to chairdancing.com The tape is 19.95 . My favorite is the 3rd or 4th one on the tape that you use paper plates with it. I know it looks really outdated and boring, but I promise you will love it. Just go to the plate section first. I couldnt believe the workout I did in my chair, yet it can be done at 3 levels! Even 80 year olds can do it, but talk to doctor first. Here is the description.>>only by this one because the other versions are not that good. Chair DancingĂ‚® The Original Program is a fun and convenient way to get aerobic exercise and improve muscle tone and flexibility. You'll do the cha-cha, the can-can, a tap dance, and much more while seated comfortably on a chair. Originally scored music and up-beat choreography make Chair DancingĂ‚® the fitness program you'll look forward to doing regularly. Three exercise levels show you how to adapt the program to your current fitness ability. You'll continue to be challenged as your endurance improves. When you exercise the Chair DancingĂ‚® way, you'll enjoy aerobic fitness like never before! Running time: 45 min.
5 :
Only your doctor should be prescribing a workout schedule for you as he/she is the only person who has your complete medical records. Coming in here for recommendations is just not safe.
6 :
You will get all kinds of crazy answers on this question and some of them will be hateful, so ignore them. What I am about to tell you is the truth. 1. remove the junk food from your house. 2. when you grocery shop. buy fresh fruit and veggies to snack on and dont even go down the junk food isle because if it is in your shopping cart and you take it home, you will eat it. 3. for breakfast have skim milk and cereal or oat meal and splenda instead of bacon, eggs, pancakes and all of that breakfast stuff. 4. for a snack in between breakfast and lunch eat a low fat something such as a V-8, a peach, a breyers frozen fruit popsicle, or a rice cake with about a tablespoon of low fat cottage cheese on it. Maybe even a no fat chocolate cup cake and a cup of skim milk. 5. eat salad or a big bowl of vegtables with no fat or low fat dressing for lunch and maybe some cottage cheese or some tuna for lunch 6. I always eat something dairy in the afternoon to keep my appetite under control such as some skim milk with 2 or 3 small cookies like oreo's or no fat cookies. Even a cheese stick and some low fat crackers to get me over the hump 7. drink lots of water if its ok with your doctor or find an alternative drink such as iced tea with splenda. 8. Supper needs to be low fat. whatever you like. No red meats bake instead of fry your foods. chicken breast is an excellent meat to have with supper with something in the vegtable dept You can always eat as many veggies as you want because they have little or no fat. Cook them in their own water no butter or margarine on the veggies. 9, have some fresh fruit to munch on when you feel like you are going to cave in you can eat the fruits instead of the very fatty foods.

south beach diet is good for tachycardia. i've read in the past that it's better than atkins diet. it is being recommended for those with heart problems, also with rapid heartbeats. it improves your cholesterol level and at the same time makes you lose weight. geesssh! i think my brother just needs one now!
8 :
I also have tachycardia and have had the same problem finding exercise that won't trigger it. The most successful method I've found is eating properly, lots of fruit & fibre, and walking. Yes, it can be boring, but walk your kids to the park, then walk laps around the park while you watch them, and so on. I personally have found that anything more than a brisk walk is enough to get my heart going too fast. The main thing is to do it regularly, try to do it 1/2 hour a day. I know that's hard for a busy Mom, but it's worth it in the end. I also found out that if I got a good walk in during the day, my heart was calmer for the rest of the day and I slept better. Slow & easy is key. Good luck to you!

Heart disease versus Hypercholesterolemia (elevated LDL, Triglicerides & Serum cholesterol.) 1. Lipitor (Pfizer) Consistently ranking number one, Lipitor holds the title by a wide margin. Its annual sales of $12.9 billion were more than twice those of the next drug on the list. Lipitor treats high cholesterol, which is a major risk factor for heart disease. 5. Zocor (Merck) This is another medication used to treat high cholesterol and prevent heart disease. In 2005, Zocor had global sales of $5.3 billion, and its annual growth wasn't shabby either, at 10.7 percent.

What illnesses and diseases raise LDL other than Heart Disease

What illnesses and diseases raise LDL other than Heart Disease?
Does inflammation raise LDL?
Heart Diseases - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Actually, heart disease doesn't raise LDL - according to the medical community, it happens the other way around. However, LDL (the so-called "bad" cholesterol) is a misnomer. There really isn't a such thing as "bad" cholesterol. The pharmaceutical industry has capitalized on the slogan of "bad cholesterol" and has produced toxic-to-the-body chemicals that minimally lower the level of cholesterol in the body and in the process cause liver damage to thousands of people, some who die as a result of using the medication. It is surprising that none of the frequently quoted and media-popularized doctors has reflected on the fact that cholesterol levels are measured from blood taken from the veins, yet nowhere in medical literature is there a single case of cholesterol having caused obstruction of the veins. Venous blood moves far slower than arterial blood and thus would be more inclined to have cholesterol deposits if the assumption of "bad cholesterol" were accurate. This mistake by the medical community, and its capitalization by the pharmaceutical industry, has caused an ongoing fraud against society. In truth, the so-called "bad" cholesterol is actually far more beneficial than is appreciated. The reason for its rise in the body is because of complications caused by chronic unintentional dehydration and insufficient urine production. Dehydration produces concentrated, acidic blood that becomes even more dehydrated during its passage through the lungs before reaching the heart - because of evaporation of water in the lungs during breathing. The membranes of the blood vessels of the heart and main arteries going up to the brain become vulnerable to the shearing pressure produced by the thicker, acidic blood. This shearing force of toxic blood causes abrasions and minute tears in the lining of the arteries that can peel off and cause embolisms of the brain, kidneys and other organs. To prevent the damaged blood vessel walls from peeling, low-density (so-called "bad") cholesterol coats and covers up the abrasions and protects the underlying tissue like a waterproof bandage until the tissue heals. Thus, the vital, life-saving role of low-density cholesterol proves this substance is of utmost importance in saving the lives of those who do not adequately hydrate their bodies so that their blood can flow easily through the blood vessels without causing damage. Cholesterol is an element from which many of our hormones are made. Vitamin D is made by the body from cholesterol in our skin that is exposed to sunlight. Cholesterol is used in the insulating membranes that cover our nerve systems. There is no such a thing as bad cholesterol. If all the primary ingredients are available for its normal functions, the human body does not engage in making things that are bad for its survival. Until now we did not know water was a vital nutrient that the body needed at all times - and in sufficient quantity. Water itself - not caffeinated beverages that further dehydrate - is a better cholesterol-lowering medication than any chemical on the market. It is absolutely safe and is not harmful to the body like the dangerous medications now used.

LDL has been proven (through decades of research) to contribute to heart disease. Aggressive lowering of LDL has been proven to decrease the risk of death for those with coronary artery disease. So yes, LDL helps to CAUSE heart disease, not the other way around. Other conditions like familial hypercholesterolemia type IIa and hypothyroidism cause elevated LDL levels. People with the bad type of familial hypercholesterolemia typically have cholesterol levels 3-4 times normal (or more), and many of these people die in their 20s from heart attacks. Other conditions that contribute to atherosclerosis, which causes heart disease, are obesity, hypertension (high blood pressure), smoking, inactivity (no exercise), family history, and diabetes. Atherosclerosis is, in part, an inflammatory process. The process of cholesterol deposition in the arteries requires white blood cells and inflammatory mediators. Statins are one of the most successful drugs for reducing the rate of atherosclerosis because in addition to lowering LDL, they also act as anti-inflammatories

Is Congestive heart Failure a condition like strep throat or a disease like heart disease

Is Congestive heart Failure a condition like strep throat or a disease like heart disease?

Heart Diseases - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Hi, catherine - It sounds like your question basically boils down to semantics. When someone is in congestive heart failure, their level of activity is limited by shortness of breath or fatigue. Usually this is a result of abnormal heart function (a 'cardiomyopathy'), but once they are adequately treated and feel back to normal again, they are technically no longer IN congestive heart failure. But they still have a cardiomyopathy because the underlying problem has not changed. So you COULD say that congestive heart failure is a clinical condition, but the cardiomyopathy is the underlying disease. You could argue that either way, though...
2 :
It is a heart disease. but the causative organism is the same which effect for sore throat. All the signs and symptoms are of heart disease like chest congetion, shortness of breath, cynosis, cardiomegaly, swelling etc
3 :
Congestive heart failure, or heart failure, is a condition in which the heart is unable to adequately pump blood throughout the body and/or unable to prevent blood from "backing up" into the lungs. In most cases, heart failure is a process that occurs over time, when an underlying condition damages the heart or makes it work too hard, weakening the organ. Heart failure is characterized by shortness of breath (dyspnea) and abnormal fluid retention, which usually results in swelling (edema) in the feet and legs. The heart consists of four chambers: the right atrium, the left atrium, the right ventricle, and the left ventricle, and four major valves: the mitral valve, the tricuspid valve, the aortic valve, and the pulmonary valve. Atria are relatively thin-walled chambers that receive blood from the circulatory system and from the lungs. Ventricles are muscular chambers that pump blood into the circulatory system and into the lungs. Blood passes from the atria into the ventricles through two processes. During the "resting phase," when the ventricles are not contracting, the tricuspid and mitral valves open and allow some of the blood that has accumulated in the atria to flow passively through the valves into the ventricles. Then, the atria contract and actively pump blood out through the valves and into the ventricles. Once the ventricles fill with blood, they contract, pumping blood to the lungs and the rest of the body. When the left ventricle cannot adequately pump blood out of the left atrium, or when one or more of the heart valves becomes leaky or narrowed (stenotic), blood can "back up" into the lungs, causing "left-sided" heart failure. When this occurs, the lungs become congested with fluid (called pulmonary edema), causing difficulty breathing and interfering with the movement of oxygen from the lungs into the bloodstream, causing fatigue. When an abnormality or condition affects the flow of blood through the right ventricle, pressure in the blood vessels increases and fluid is forced from the blood vessels into body tissues. This "right-sided" heart failure causes swelling (edema), usually in the feet and legs, and sometimes, in the abdomen

Is there a difference between Coronary heart disease and ischemic heart disease

Is there a difference between Coronary heart disease and ischemic heart disease?
thanks

They have different names if that helps but otherwise i have no idea
2 :
You can have coronary artery disease without having ischemic heart disease. Ischemic heart disease is a result of coronary artery disease. The heart muscle can become weakened as a result of severe plaque build-up in the heart arteries which may lead to a heart attack. Sometimes, this can cause damage to the heart muscle. Once that tissue is necrotic or dead, it won't ever pump again like it once did, despite revascularization or medicinces. This is ischemic heart disease. On the other hand, you can have mild plaque buildup in the arteries of the heart that does not limit blood flow to the heart muscle. You can have coronary artery disease that requires angioplasty and stenting or even bypass surgery, and still have preserved heart function. This would be coronary artery disease, but not ischemic heart disease. Hope this helps.
3 :
yes. CAD (coronary heart disease) is an abnormal condition caused by a blockage in a coronary artery wich supplies the heart blood and nurishes it if a coronary artery blocks more than something about 60 % it may cause an ischemi in a part of the heart`s muscle and thus an ischemic herat disease is observed
4 :
My Mom had severe congestive heart disease and I thought I should know this. I searched it and the two words are used together, so apparently they refer to the same condition.
5 :
ischemia is lack of oxygen reaching to heart muscle and it does not reach as arteries are blocked. So it is same thing in my opinion. When arteries will open and oxygen reaches the heart muscle the ischemia will disappear.
6 :
It's cause and effect of the same thing.
7 :
coronary heart disease is caused by the narrowin of da coronary arteries due to cholestrol accumulation in its wall resultin in decreased oxygen supply to that particular area.dis is called ischaemia. ischaemic heart disease is therefore any cause which results in decreased oxygen supply.eg atherosclerosis, thrombus(platelet accumulation).throboembolus,or deformaties in arteries due to other disease(a secondary effect of other disease).........
