Coronary heart disease usually is caused by uncontrolled problems with cholesterol. The cholesterol causes a "plaque" to form in the arteries. It lumps together causing blockages. Areas this is of particular concern is the arteries leading to the heart, in the carotid arteries, in the brain and the legs. Blockages can be stented to open them up in the heart and the carotids and sometimes in the legs. Blockages can build until the patient experiences a heart attack or a stroke.
