Hypertensive heart disease refers to coronary artery disease, heart failure, and enlargement of the heart that occur because of high blood pressure. see also: http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/h/hypertensive_heart_disease/intro.htm

Hypertensive heart disease would be any changes that occur in the heart in response to high blood pressure (hypertension.) The most common change is thickening of the heart muscle in response to the high pressure. This is known as left ventricular hypertrophy. This is the most common cause of diastolic dysfunction, which means that the heart has difficulty filling. Over time, some patients can then have enlargement of the cardiac cavity. This can lead to a type of heart failure known as systolic dysfunction in which the heart does not pump out enough blood. The point is that hypertensive heart disease is a very broad term that means any heart disease that is the result of hypertension. Heart attacks from blockages in the vessels that supply the heart (coronary artery disease) would NOT be considered a hypertensive heart disease even though hypertension is a risk factor. There are many other diseases that can produce similar changes in the heart, but are not hypertensive heart disease. For example, a leaky heart valve can lead to left ventricular hypertrophy but it would not be considered hypertensive heart disease. I hope that makes sense, if not let me know. Good luck.
